The New Zealand Planning Institute conference is well underway in Christchurch, and yesterday saw the Western Trails and Adventures fieldtrip (sponsored by CKL) go ahead.
Visiting several locations including Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research to see the Allan Herbarium, the group also took in the Whakaora Te Ahuriri wetland project at Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere (pictured). The Whakaora Te Ahuriri constructed wetland, developed following calls to see the lagoon restored, has been co-designed by the local iwi and community. The project undertook earthworks, engineering and planting over the four-hectare sit to create the physical body of the wetland in 2019 and 2020, a challenge as the water level varies greatly.
The final stop on the tour was the Christchurch Adventure Park, where attendees discussed the increased risks from climate change, and the Park’s commitment to social and environmental sustainability practices.
With plenty on the schedule for the rest of the week, the team are looking forward to connecting with industry peers and bringing back more insights on the theme of Hīkina te Mānuka: Rise up to the Challenges.
