CKL is working with Tauranga City Council to provide design and project management services for the detailed design phase for this project. The objective is to mitigate the high stormwater depth x velocity risk in the Awaiti Place stormwater catchment which poses a risk to residents.
A team of consultants was initially tasked to deliver specific components of the diverse project including geotechnical and dam design, planning and consents, stormwater modelling and flood assessment and civil design.
Initial options included the assessment of various solutions including cross-catchment transfer, upgrading of an existing dam, construction of a new dam and installation of a diversion pipeline.
A multi-criteria assessment was undertaken to select the most appropriate solution which is at detail design stage and includes a 10m high SW detention dam, 400m of 1800 DIA SW pipe and energy dissipation structures, enhanced fish passage design, upgrading of the Awaiti SW attenuation pond and ancillary road crossings.
Tauranga City Council opted for an early contractor involvement (ECI) approach to minimise risk of scope creep or change and cost over-runs.
CKL’s ongoing involvement has included the project management of the consenting and notification process; coordination of the detail design team and liaison with Tauranga City Council, the regional council and local iwi. The project is due for construction in 2024.
